The internet is a valuable tool to learn how to do a task. Any possible topic has multiple pages and videos dedicated to teaching the user how to do something. Sites like eHow are filled with user generated content.
Your assignment is to create an instructional video about any topic. You should be proficient enough to be able to teach a group of beginners how to effectively perform a set of steps to accomplish a task. This video is going to be supported with text. This can be written instructions to go along with the video or additional information. Also be sure to include your references in the entry.
You are going to post your videos on the class blog site as a separate entry. Have the supporting text prepared as a word document so it can be pasted in. Also be sure to have all group members names listed in the entry.
As with all major assignments, there will be a reflection entry that will be due two classes after the project due date. Each group member will submit his or her own individual reflection. Go into detail about what each member was responsible for, the process used in creating the video, and reasons for particular choices.
Evaluation
The rubric will be evaluating the following criteria:
- Production Quality - Are the images and sound clear? Does the production look rehearsed?
- Effectiveness - Are the instructions easy to follow along? Is the video concise?
- Grammar and Spelling - Is the supported text using correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling?
- Creativity - Is the topic unique or is the video shot in a way that it is also entertaining?
- Use of Conventions - Is the production of the video suited for instruction?
- Reflection - Does this reflection writing correctly use the terms we discussed in class? Is the reflection more than a recounting of what the group did? Why were particular choices selected? What could be improved.
Helpful Hints to Complete the Assignment
- Write out a script and practice it. You will save time and your sanity.
- Don't worry about messing up. If you make a mistake, take a deep breath, count to three and then carry on. You can work with the footage without having to start and stop the camera?
- Think about the best method to shoot the video. Does it require multiple shots from different angles or can it be accomplished in one continuous shot?
- Post production is your friend. You can add music, filters, or voice overs to your presentation.
